Dosage

The generic Misoprostol is available in the strength of 100 mcg and 200 mcg tablets.

Usage

Cytotec (Misoprostol) is a prescription medication used to prevent stomach ulcers during the treatment with NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) or Aspirin Canada. Misoprostol helps decreasing the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding caused by stomach ulcers. Cytotec works by binding to and stimulating several prostaglandin receptors in the cervix. For abortions it is used by itself and with mifepristone or methotrexate. Cytotec is administered orally (in the form of whole swallowing tablets) from 36 to 48 hours after the administration of mifepristone (abortion pill). The usual dose used in these cases is 400 mcg of Cytotec. Cytotec works by acting as a synthetic prostaglandin, which is a chemical made within many organs in the body that protects the inner lining of the stomach from the ulcer-producing effects of NSAIDS. The recommended adult oral dose of Cytotec for reducing the risk of NSAID-induced gastric ulcers is 200 mcg four times daily with food. If this dose cannot be tolerated, a dose of 100 mcg can be used.

Vaginal administration of Cytotec is used for labor induction and treatment of postpartum hemorrhage. Cytotec is also used in combination with mifepristone to end a pregnancy (abortion). In these cases, Cytotec works by stimulating several prostaglandin receptors in the cervix. Cytotec is administered orally from 36 to 48 hours after the administration of mifepristone (abortion pill). When used in combination of mifepristone, the usual dose of Cytotec is 800 mcg via vaginal, oral, or buccal route. Cytotec works by acting as a synthetic prostaglandin, which is a chemical made within many organs in the body that protects the inner lining of the stomach from the ulcer-producing effects of NSAIDS. The recommended adult oral dose of Cytotec for reducing the risk of NSAID-induced gastric ulcers is 200 mcg four times daily with food; last dose to be administered at bedtime. If this dose cannot be tolerated, a dose of 100 mcg taken four times daily can be used.
